Leominster State Forest

DIRECTIONS: From Route 2, take Route 31 South. Soon you will pass Leominster State Forest Headquarters on the right; continue, the park entrance is up ahead on the left. During the summer season, there is a $2.00 fee. There is a swimming beach, cookout and picnic area, and restrooms. You can also park further along on Route 31 and walk back to the park.

TERRAIN: Moderate, sections of the trail can get very wet during the spring and after heavy rainfalls. The hike takes 2 hours.

Your journey begins at Crow Hill Pond. Behind the restrooms you’ll see a trail. Step down onto the trail heading NW. Turn left at the blue blaze. Take another left onto Wolf Rock Trail when you come to a trail map. Continue on this trail, over the NEMBA wood planks. At the next trail map, leave Wolf Rock Trail; heading left in the direction of the double white arrows. Continue on this trail as it weaves along. When you come to a T intersection, turn left. (You’ll see a dirt road on the right). Continue on this trail with the white blazes, past a family of small boulders. When you come to the next T intersection, go right. You will see a sign for Rocky Pond Trail. Continue on this white blaze trail for awhile. When you come to a large flat boulder, you’ll also see double white arrows. Turn right onto this trail. Continue along as you pass a small stream, sweet smelling tall ferns, and a very rocky trail. Watch for a downed white bark tree, blocking a trail on the right, with a view of a pond. This white tree is pointing you onward. Continue on, carefully noting the white painted blazes on the trees. Stop at the "Y" tree on the right with a white blaze. Take about 13 steps and stop at the next tree, with a remnant of white paint. Turn to your left and head off the trail for about 13 steps, stepping over another white, fallen tree, and arrive next to a rock. As you look down at the rock from above, you just might think it’s a crow cawing to you that your treasure lies below. Stamp in and take a rest on the rock, with a view of Rocky Pond. To head back, you can go back the way you came, take a variety of other trails back, if you have a trailmap, or take the following easy route, which gives you several views of Rocky Pond as you head back to Crow Hill Pond. Go back to the trail, continuing along with the pond on your right. At the next trail intersection, continue straight ahead. When the trail ends at a dirt road, turn right onto the road. At the next intersection with another dirt road, take a right. When you get to the sign for Wolf Rock Trail, head right, back towards Crow Hill Pond and the parking lot.
