The Heron Letterbox on the Charles River

Charles River Reservation
Watertown, Massachusetts

NOTE: This box was reported missing in April 2005 and will not be replaced.

DIRECTIONS: From the Mass Pike, take Exit 17; bear left across the bridge, head straight to Watertown, onto Galen St. Cross the river to the Watertown Square intersection.  Turn left onto Main St. Try to stay in the left lane. Soon turn left onto Cross St..  Then turn right onto Pleasant St. and you will soon see the sign for the Charles River Reservation parking lot on the left.  There are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat or drink in Watertown Square. During pool season, admission to the swimming and wading pool is free..

CLUE DIFFICULTY: Easy
TERRAIN: Easy walk, under an hour, lots of spots to rest
ESTABLISHED: July, 2000

From the parking lot, head to the pool.
Take the path along the river, behind the pool.
As you take your walk, many a flora and fauna you will see despite the urban setting.
Some lively, but some trapped, as still as Sleeping Beauty.
Stroll along, you will know when you must cross the river
And head back along the other side.
(Hint: a street, cross the river, turn left at the next street, and shortly the path continues)
Look to the dragonfly’s magic to help you break the spell.
All illusions will be broken when you look beneath
the stone foundations of the next wooden dock.
Stamp in to free all the stone beauties.
As they chirp and call their thanks, you can continue on your way.
Cross the footbridge to go back to the beginning.
