The poems chronicle a thirty year spiritual journey away from the safety
of right answers, out of orthodoxy and away from perfection into ambiguity.
It is a journey begun in sorrow and loss which moves uncertainly into
richness of the physical world, into relationship and beyond. It is a woman's
journey into an ordinary and astounding second half of life. The poems
demonstrate the ultimate gift - the befriending of a self.
A Hunger for the Flying is written as a gift for others who wonder about
life, especially later life. It is offered as a springboard, an
encouragement toward one's own truth.
A Hunger for the Flying is a kind of memoir in poetry form; a gentle, tentative,
bold, fierce, funny, and always honest expression of the second half of a
rather ordinary woman's life. Each of the 140 poems is a brush stroke.
Collectively they form an impressionistic portrait of the richness
of a life after forty, after the culture has lost interest.
